Equipment

  • Large Sauce Pot
  • Wooden Spoon
  • Chopping board
  • Large sharp knife
  • Large fine sieve

Ingredients

  • 1 pound mild Italian sausage sliced into 1/8 inch pieces or bite size
  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 2 (28 ounces) cans tomato puree
  • 1 (28 ounces) can tomato sauce
  • 3 tablespoons sugar
  • 1 1/2 tablespoons basil
  • 1 1/2 tablespoons oregano
  • 1 1/2 tablespoons parsley
  • 1/2 teaspoon fennel seeds
  • 2 tablespoons minced garlic
  • 1 large onion diced
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground black pepper
  • 1 teaspoon salt or to taste
  • 1/4 cup white wine
  • 2 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil

Instructions

  • Place the diced onions, minced garlic, ground beef, and sliced sausages into a large sauce pot on medium heat. Brown everything together while mixing every now and then to prevent burned bits.
  • Transfer the meat mixture into a large fine sieve and drain the fat.
  • Place the beef mixture back into the pot. Add the white wine, and simmer on low for 15. This will allow the alcohol to evaporate while giving you a delicious flavor to your sauce.
  • Add the remaining ingredients into the pot with the meat mixture, wit exception to the basil, parsley, oregano, and the olive oil. Stir to combine. Cover, bring to a gentle boil on medium high heat. Reduce heat to low and let it simmer for 20 minutes.
  • Add the oregano, basil, parsley, and olive oil into the sauce, and let it simmer for 10 more minutes.
  • Use this pasta sauce on your favorite gluten free spaghetti or spaghetti squash, in my gluten free lasagna recipe, or any of your favorite gluten free pasta dishes!

Notes

Allowing this sauce to sit in the fridge overnight before using it will enhance the flavors tremendously. You can store whatever you do not use in freezer bags and freeze them for when you’re in a pinch and not sure what to make for dinner.
