How To Cook Perfectly Fluffy Rice

Rinse the Rice

Rinsing your rice can seem as such a nuisance, and is often forgotten, but it is an essential step to getting super fluffy rice. This step gets rid of the excess starches present in rice that can cause it to gum up. Unwanted substances that are unseen to the naked eye can also be present. So rinsing your rise is essential to getting it clean and healthy.

Place the rice in a fine sieve, and rinse it under cold running water. Scrub the rice with your hands under the running water to cause the excess starch to come off. Repeat this process until the liquid that is draining from the rice appears semi clear. Drain excess moisture.

Water-to-Rice Ratio

The water to rice ratio will vary according to variety of rice you are using, but in general, most rice requires 1 1/2 to 1 ratio. To every 1 and 1/2 cups of water youโ€™ll need 1 cup of rice. Some varieties of medium grain rice will require a 2 to 1 ratio. Always follow the label on the back of your rice bag. It will tell you the exact ratio you need for that variety of rice.

To Season Or Not To Season

Seasoning your rice is totally optional. If you are using the rice as a side dish for a stir-fry for example, then seasoning is not necessary because most stir-fries contain a lot of salts and sauce. In that case the unflavored rice balances out the flavor of the entire dish put together.

However, if you desire to season your rice because you are using it as a side for a milder type of dish, you can add a tablespoons of butter per 1 cup of rice, and some salt and pepper according to taste. How To Cook Rice

After rinsing the rice, add it to a heavy bottom pot. Add the amount of water that is required for the variety you are using. Cover the pot, and bring it to a boil on high heat. Once the water reaches a rolling boil reduce the heat to medium low and allow it to cook for 18 to 20 minutes, while covered.

Stove Types

If you are using an electric stove, remove the pot off the first burner, and place it onto a different burner. Set the burner you just placed it on to medium low heat, and allow it to cook for the required time.

Electric stoves tend to retain the heat, and they cool down a lot slower than gas stoves. So even though you might have reduced the heat, the pot will continue on its rolling boil for quite a bit, evaporating the water, and causing your rice to come out dry.

Gas stoves on the other hand are much easier because they do not retain the heat. Once the water reaches a rolling boil, all you have to do is reduce the heat to medium low, and voila, your heat is perfect.

Resting Time

After you have turned off the heat, it is very important to remove the rice off the heat source, especially if you are using an electric stove. Resting time is very crucial in giving you those fluffy grains that you are looking for. So allow your rice to rest for 10 minutes after the cooking process is done.

Fluff With a Fork

Once the rice has rested, fluff it with a fork to separate the grains. I personally never do that because I like to scoop the rice in clumps. I find that the grains hold their shape better this way. But if you want every grain of rice to absorb whatever sauce you are drizzling over it, then fluffing is the way to go.

How To Cook Brown Rice:

Brown rice is a whole grain with the bran and germ intact, offering more nutrients and a nuttier flavor. But because it is a whole grain, it requires a longer cooking time

  1. Rinse the Rice: Rinse 1 cup of brown rice under cold water until the water is semi clear.
  2. Water-to-Rice Ratio: Use a 2:1 water-to-rice ratio. For 1 cup of rice, add 2 cups of water, or according to label directions.
  3. Cooking Process: Bring the water to a boil, add a pinch of salt, then reduce heat, cover, and simmer for 35-40 minutes.
  4. Rest and Fluff: Allow the rice to rest, covered, for 10 minutes after cooking. Fluff with a fork before serving.
