Why Make Homemade Taco Seasoning

Let’s start with the basics of this recipe.

Sure you can go to the store and buy yourself a packet of taco seasoning to use in your favorite taco or burrito dish, but do you know what’s in that seasoning?

They inject it with so many nonsense ingredients and anti-caking agents that I am pretty sure our body does not need, and was not meant to ingest.

I am a firm believer that God has created our bodies to live naturally.

The more simple and natural the ingredients are the happier our bodies will be. I am not just saying this to make you try my recipe.

In fact, this is really up to you whether you try it or not, and I won’t judge you if you went and bought a taco seasoning packet from the store. I truly won’t!

But, I am speaking strictly from experience. I have observed the behaviors of my body over the last decade, and I am pretty confident that the more artificial and chemically produced ingredients that my body ingests, the more it suffers.

As the years progress, I am finding myself to become more and more sensitive to artificially produced ingredients, and because of that I am switching to a more natural, healthy, simple lifestyle.

It is not just the gluten or the wheat that affects our bodies. Everything that we put in our bodies plays a role in how it will react. Because of that, I am more mindful of the things that I put in my body now, and of the things that I feed my family with than I was 10 years ago.

As a wife, and a mom of 3 kids, I want to feed my family with the best ingredients and healthiest food that I can think of, make, and come across.

Choosing a Healthy Lifestyle

I try to make a lot of naturally fermented foods to feed our guts with healthy bacteria. This year, we got our second batch of chickens to eat farm fresh eggs from free range chickens.

Whenever possible, I try to make my own naturally fermented homemade yogurt. Which I like to ferment for extra long to give us all those good bacteria benefits.

In the past, I’ve also made gluten free sourdough starter, and wheat sourdough starter. We use them often to make sourdough breads, Sourdough pizza, sourdough pancakes, and so many sourdough foods!

But these are some of the health choices that we have made as a family, and that I have made as a mom.

We are trying our best to rid our bodies of toxins by introducing healthy, toxin free foods, and natural ingredients.

We plant our own vegetables, can them, Freeze dry them, and freeze them.

And we try to do our best to live this lifestyle. I am sure there are many more enhancements that we can do along the way.

The key is to take it one step at a time and not to jump all in as it can get very overwhelming if you do that.

So if you want to live this kind of lifestyle, just make one simple change. When you are comfortable with that and feel like you can move on, then you can add another small change.

and now on to our recipe Which is super simple.

All you need to do is just mix all those aromatic ingredients together in a small bowl.

You might want to use a whisk to be sure that they are all well incorporated together.

Once you have mixed them really well, place them in a glass jar with a tight sealing lid.

Again, this is another health conscious decision that I have made recently.

Healthy Options for Food Storage

I would like to have most, if not all my food storage to be in glass, pottery, ceramic, or stainless steel.

I still need to do more research on that to know which of these is the best option and for what ingredients.

Taking it one small step at a time is the way to go.

being realistic in my expectations and knowing that I can not purchase all these containers in one shot is also important. That is a big expense to take on, so it will have to happen slowly over time.

Over the years, I have noticed that even if you do not put plastic in the microwave (which is another health decision that I am still not sure about) the plastic seems to be still leaching into your food.

This can be caused by acidic ingredients such as tomatoes, or abrasive ingredients such as spices for example.

The change happens very slowly, but if you observe your plastic storage containers closely, you will notice what I am talking about.

How to Store Your Seasoning

After you store the seasoning in your preferred container, you will need to store it in a cool dry place away from direct sunlight.

I find that storing my spices in the fridge gives them a much longer life. Unfortunately, I can’t do that with all my spices, as my fridge will be full of spices and I won’t be able to fit anything else!

Ways to Use Homemade Taco Seasoning

The way how I like to use this seasoning is for whenever I make beef or chicken tacos, chicken fajitas, or chicken burritos, but I am sure that you can use it in many other variations as well.

For example, you can season some vegetables with it, add a little olive oil, and grill them, and you got yourself a whole bunch of deliciousness that is bursting with flavor.

You can also use it for bean dishes. As a busy mom, I place my chicken in a crock pot, season it, and let it cook for a few hours. Then, when it’s time for dinner, shred it and serve it with the taco helpings, or make burritos and bake them for 10 minutes.

I can see myself using this seasoning in many other dishes. The key here is to be creative and don’t be afraid of making mistakes.

If you want to experiment with your food, experiment on a small scale and see if you like it. You’ll be surprised how many things you can come up with!
