Now that the holidays are around the corner, you must be looking for a green bean recipe other than the traditional green bean casserole.
There is nothing wrong with a good green bean casserole. I personally love it, but this green bean salad is so amazing, and it will bring a new perspective of green beans to your thanksgiving table or any holiday table.
Of course, as per usual, this is a gluten free green bean salad. So if you or someone you love is on a gluten free diet, this would be a perfect gluten free thanksgiving side dish, or a Christmas side dish.
GREEN BEAN SALAD INGREDIENTS
- Fresh Green beans you do not want to use any canned green beans in this recipe. The best part about it is that the green beans are fresh. They are steamed to perfection. So the green beans will still hold on to their crispy texture.
- Salt I don’t think there is much to be said about this one.
- Black pepper I encourage you to use freshly crushed black pepper. It will make all the difference in flavor. Whole seasoning that is not powdered or crushed holds on to its oils and stays fresher longer. This is why it will give you the best flavor when you freshly crush it or grind it.
- Parmesan cheese fresh parmesan cheese would probably give you the best flavor, but I went with the pre shredded this time. I just needed something quick since I was making a whole meal. The flavor from the shelf stable parmesan cheese was still amazing.
- Olive oil Extra virgin olive oil should be your go to. It is going to coat the green beans the parmesan cheese and all the seasoning. This is what brings all these ingredients together and adds an amazing flavor.
- Garlic Powder brings another layer of flavor that instantly takes this dish from good to outstanding.
- Sliced almonds you could use either toasted or raw. Sliced almonds are basically almonds that have been sliced into thin slices. They still hold the shape of an almond when sliced. Toasted would probably give you a deeper nuttier flavor. This time around, I used raw, just for the sake of time.
UTENSILS FOR MAKING THIS GREEN BEAN SALAD
- Steamer to steam your green beans in.
- Chopping board to cut the tips off your green beans on, and remove any imperfections.
- Sharp knife I like to use a large chef knife for all my cooking
- Medium bowl
- Measuring cups
- Measuring spoons
- 2 Wooden spoons for mixing the salad. I like to use wooden utensils because they are less likely to pierce the green beans. they also seem the best at distributing the parmesan cheese around equally.
STEAMING THE GREEN BEANS
I chose to steam the green beans instead of blanch them because I felt that they would hold on to their flavor better.
You could blanch them if you want, but keep in mind that they would hold on to more liquid this way.
Steaming the green beans takes about 10 to 20 minutes. The reason why there is such a huge time variance is because of varying cooking temperatures.
If you are steaming them on high, they might get cooked a lot quicker than if you steam them at a medium temperature. If you are using a smaller stove head vs. a larger one, your steam time will vary too.
The thing to keep in mind is, you want the green beans to stay crispy, and have a vivid bright green color when they are done.
To make sure that all the green beans cook evenly, flip them around in the steamer every couple of minutes.
As soon as the green beans are done steaming, rinse them under cold running water until they are cool to the touch. This will stop the cooking process, and keep your green beans crispy.

Equipment
- Steamer
- Cutting board
- Sharp knife
- Medium bowl
- Measuring Spoons
- Measuring cups
- Mixing utensil
Ingredients
- 1.2 pounds fresh green beans
- ¾ teaspoon salt
- ½ teaspoon freshly crushed black pepper
- ¼ cup shredded parmesan cheese
- 3 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil
- ¾ teaspoon garlic powder
- ¼ cup sliced almonds raw or toasted
Instructions
- Rinse the green beans and drain. Using a sharp knife, cut the tips of the green beans and any blemishes.
- Fill the bottom of a steamer pot with water. About 2 to 3 inches full. Bring to a boil.
- Place the green beans in the steamer, the part that has the holes. Place it over the pot with boiling water, and cover. Allow the green beans to steam for 10 to 20 minutes or until they turn into bright vivid green in color, and are absolutely crispy. Flip the green beans around every 2 to 3 minutes to ensure even cooking. Taste the green beans once you think they are done. If you feel that they still have a raw flavor, allow them to steam for a couple minutes longer.
- Once the green beans are done steaming, immediately remove from the steamer, and rinse under cold running water to stop the cooking process. Once the green beans are cool, set them aside to drain fully. You can lay them on the cutting board or a kitchen towel to remove any remaining liquid.
- Once the green beans are fully drained, add them to a medium bowl along with all the seasoning. Give them a quick toss, and you’re done!
- Serve this green bean salad as a side dish on your Thanksgiving or Christmas table, or any day of the week.
