WHY OVEN BAKED BACON

I have tried several ways to cook bacon, and by far this is my favorite. Letโ€™s be honest, cooking bacon is never clean, and it is my least favorite thing to do in the kitchen, but this method gives the best turnout as it is the cleanest. The bacon comes out tasting the best, and has the best texture when it is cooked in this manner.

By using this method you will end up with a great crumbly texture. All the pieces will get cooked evenly with no burnt edges or soggy middles, and you will also end up with pleasantly non greasy bacon.

HOW TO COOK BACON IN THE OVEN

Utensils

  • A deep oven pan: Itโ€™s job is to hold the grease that will drip off the bacon.
  • A cooking rack: It will have to fit perfectly in the pan, but also allow for at least about an inch space between the rack and the pan.

Ingredients

  • Of course, we canโ€™t forget the bacon.

The thickness of the bacon will of course determine the cooking time. Mine and my familyโ€™s favorite bacon is the thinly sliced smoked bacon. This type will of course take less time to be baked than the thick sliced bacon.

Instructions

Laying out the bacon

Bacon laid in the pan, on the rack, in v shapes.
  • Before you begin this step, youโ€™ll need to preheat the oven to 425 F. This temperature is essential to ensure evenly cooked crispy bacon with no soggy middle. Too low of a temperature will take too long for the bacon to cook, and too high of a temperature might give you burnt edges.
  • After you have placed the rack into the deep pan. Take a slice of bacon, and form it into a V shape by folding it across itself. Lay out the piece of bacon onto the rack. Repeat the step with the remaining pieces of bacon while placing them fairly close to each other with no visible space in between. Continue to V cross the bacon and lay it in rows across the rack.
Lots of bacon.

Essential Tip For How To Cook Bacon In The Oven:

The V shape does not have to be wide, it could be fairly tight as long as the pieces that are touching each other are laying perfectly flat. You do not want any scrunching happening otherwise, this will create pockets of unevenly cooked bacon, and definite sogginess will be happening in those areas.

  • Place the pan filled with bacon directly on the bottom rack of the 425 preheated oven. If your oven has convection bake, use it. The outcome will be better.

What Is Convection Bake?

Convection simply means that the oven is using a fan to spread the heat equally in its chamber. This allows food to be cooked evenly from all directions rather than getting too hot on the bottom, and sort of warm on the top.

Convection ovens are also said to help food cook more quickly. Whoever came up with this invention is a genius, and deserves a reward!

So If you do not have a convection oven, youโ€™re bacon might take a bit longer to bake. Simply monitor it to ensure that it is being evenly baked, and does not get burnt.

Oven Baked Bacon

  • Allow the bacon to cook for 20 minutes on the bottom rack. You will definitely see some smoke in there, but nothing to be alarmed about. The hot fat that is rendering off the bacon and touching a hot pan, will produce some smoke.

  • After the bacon has cooked for 20 minutes allow it to cool slightly for about 3 minutes before removing it of the rack. Youโ€™ll want the bacon to be warm as you remove if of the rack. This will prevent it from braking and falling into the grease. Yes, it can still be saved if that happened, but it wonโ€™t be as good.
  • If you happen to wait too long before you remove it of the rack, the bacon will begin to crumble as you lift it of the rack. The warmth of the bacon allows it to still be slightly pliable.
  • Lay out the bacon on a serving plate and allow it to cool before serving, if you can hold yourself from eating the entire plate before serving it.

The Outcome: A Delicious Oven Baked Bacon

Now you have the most perfect crispy, delicious, non greasy bacon that youโ€™ll ever come across! It is perfect to serve it with some pancakes and scrambles eggs, or crumble it on top of a salad or a soup. Enjoy!
